Google and Qualcomm have officially announced 8 years of software update support for Android ecosystem partners, but the situation surrounding One UI 7 has left me hesitant about this new enticing software package.
The Importance of Software Updates
Software updates are magic, they keep your device running after the sale. Every year, devices get new features for an improved user experience.
Samsung at the forefront
Regarding Android stands for Samsung As a leader in keeping up with the software market, the phone maker has earned a reputation for providing seven OS upgrades for its flagship phones.
The Competition: Pixel and Others
By far offers Google Pixels and Galaxy -smartphones 7 years of software support for its premium devices. That brings us to the Chinese phones, which have no concept of after-sales services.
Benefits for Consumers
It's a win-win situation for customers as they get more software support for the huge price tag. This may be relevant for Google Pixels but not for Samsungs. The Korean phone maker has announced seven years of software updates for Galaxy S24 series and later for Z Fold 6 and Flip 6. These phones are specifically tailored for this long-term software support with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset.
Challenges with UI 7
And as of February 2025, none of these have received a major software update. This is due to the late development and deployment of One UI 7.
This new software has a major revamp in the smoothness of the animations and the overall user interface that improves the user experience. Despite these improvements, the software is still lacking in action and Galaxy S24 users are waiting for a stable release.
This was the first update for this flagship phone, which was priced at ₹1,299 for the starting Ultra variant, and the update kept getting delayed due to the unfinished beta testing.
To reiterate, this was the first software update from the seven-year software support announced for the best smartphone of 2024. Over the past decade, Samsung developed its technology and software experience. Look at that UI 7, the software at the center of this discussion.
Samsung's Challenges and Future
We can be optimistic about Samsung's approach to software development and the situation may change in the near future.
But years of software support and keeping previous models in check will remain a problem. It will have to go through development phases for different devices released in different years.
Therefore, the software for devices released two years ago and perhaps older will take two to three months or maybe even more to get a new OS upgrade due to the staged development and stability testing.
Galaxy S25 The Ultra will likely be the first phone to get 8 years of software updates, running One UI 7 out of the box and will get One UI 8 (Android 16) as its first upgrade. That could be a good sign for the Galaxy S25 buyers but we can only be optimistic until Samsung shows some real progress in terms of rapid development and rollout.
