Trend Micro, a global leader in cybersecurity, today released a report outlining the company's cybersecurity predictions for 2025. The report highlights AI as a continuing driving factor in the cyber threat landscape, where cybercriminals will leverage AI to intensify their attacks and create new security challenges for businesses and consumers.

The report warns that cybercriminals will increasingly use advanced AI tools such as deepfakes, malicious digital twins, and automated phishing kits to create more believable scams and attacks. This includes:

  • Hyperpersonal social engineering attacks which uses AI to impersonate individuals and organizations in a convincing manner. These types of attacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated and today it can be difficult for even the most trained eye to identify an attack. This places increased demands on corporate security solutions.
  • Attacks against cloud environments and supply chains, where vulnerabilities in public servers are exploited to cause maximum disruption.
  • Ransomware attacks via legitimate tools, where cybercriminals mask their activity as legitimate and exploit corporate networks and resources.

– AI is accelerating and driving development for both opportunities and risks, says Martin Fribrock, Head of Sweden at Trend MicroFor business is crucial to implement robust security measures to protect both AI systems and traditional network structures. As the attack surface grows, even the smallest connected devices need to be protected to create holistic protection for the organization. For us at Trend Micro We see it as crucial to collaborate across industry boundaries to combat the ever-increasing threats. Just as a network is only as strong as its weakest link, so too is our society and our entire infrastructure. We must ensure that our critical infrastructure has well-functioning cybersecurity first and foremost, and then all companies. That is why it is good that directives like NIS2 raise the issue and raise the requirements for cybersecurity across the EU.

Here are some of Trend Micro's cybersecurity predictions for 2025:

  • AI in the mainstream and new security risks: Companies that introduce AI agents risk exposing sensitive information or becoming targets of attacks to a greater extent if it is not done correctly.
  • Hacktivism and geopolitical influence: State-backed groups are predicted to continue to increase their hacktivism, with political and ethical ideals as a clear driving force.
  • Automotive industry under pressure: Increasing threats to the vehicles' centralized electronic devices (ECU) and the communication between charging stations and vehicles will pose an escalating threat to the automotive industry and drivers.
