Banking and finance sector best at cybersecurity, according to new study

The banking and finance sector ranks as a leader in cybersecurity management, according to a new international study, with organizations in the sector reporting being particularly effective at mitigating risks and managing cyberattacks.

According to a study from Barracuda Networks, which covered multiple industries globally, 55 percent of respondents in the banking and finance sector feel they are very effective in managing IT security risks. The study shows a high level of confidence within the sector in its ability to meet today's cyber threats.

Strict requirements strengthen cybersecurity

The banking and finance sector’s success in cybersecurity is often attributed to the strict laws and regulations that organizations must adhere to. These requirements drive a high level of compliance and security focus, which in turn creates a robust security culture.

In addition, the importance of employees at all levels prioritizing IT security is emphasized. This culture is considered to contribute to the sector's leadership in the field.

“Maintaining cybersecurity requires more than just technology; it requires a culture of security awareness,” explains Peter Graymon, Nordic Country Manager at Barracuda Networks.

The public sector is struggling with challenges

In contrast to the banking and finance sector, only 40 percent of respondents in the public sector say they are effective in managing cyber threats. Limited budgets and resources are one of the biggest barriers to implementing long-term cybersecurity strategies.

“The public sector faces greater obstacles in integrating cybersecurity into its daily operations, due to budget constraints and an often fragmented focus,” adds Graymon.

Other sectors in comparison

The Barracuda Networks study also examined the retail and manufacturing industries, where 42 percent and 45 percent of respondents respectively said they felt prepared to deal with IT threats. This indicates a growing awareness of the importance of robust cybersecurity within different industries, although the banking and finance sector continues to be at the forefront.
