XPENG AI Day featured several major innovations in AI, robotics, and future mobility. The company showed how its technology now spans cars, robots, and flying vehicles with a level of ambition that surpasses much of what is on the market today. The event also confirmed XPENGs long-term goal of creating an integrated ecosystem where physical and digital intelligence work together.

Highlights from XPENG AI Day

XPENG is often associated with electric car technology, but in recent years the company has broadened its technology base significantly. During AI Day, the company gave a clear picture of how their development is now moving beyond traditional mobility. Technology is one of XPENGs core principles and since its inception in 2014, the company has built an organization where around 40 percent of all employees work in research and development. This extensive investment was particularly evident during this year's AI Day, which was held at the company's new headquarters in Guangzhou, China.

A new era of physical artificial intelligence

One of the most significant presentations was the launch of VLA 2.0. It is a new AI platform that can be described as a system that unites digital and physical intelligence. The platform is designed to understand visual signals directly without first having to be converted to text. This makes it significantly faster and more efficient than traditional models.

VLA 2.0 will be the foundational technology for many of XPENG's future ventures. The platform is designed to be used in several different product categories simultaneously. This applies to cars, humanoid robots and advanced flying vehicles. The fact that Volkswagen becomes the first global partner clearly shows that XPENG's technology is starting to have a major impact outside of China.

Robot taxi planned for operation in 2026

XPENG showed off its fully self-developed robotaxi for the first time. The vehicle is designed to operate completely driverless and has 3000 TOPS of computing power to support advanced real-time decision-making systems. One of the most notable features is that the robotaxi does not use lidar or detailed maps. Instead, it relies on a pure camera-based solution, making the system faster, cheaper and easier to scale globally.

The robotaxi is to be put into pilot operation in 2026, which places XPENG in a rapidly growing segment where several players are competing to be the first with fully autonomous transport. XPENGs solution is adapted for dense urban structures and complex traffic where the system's software continuously adapts to new situations.

The Next Gen IRON humanoid robot

One of the highlights on stage was the updated Next Gen IRON humanoid robot. The robot is built to mimic human functions with as much precision as possible. It has 82 degrees of freedom and a bionic structure where both movements and muscle responses mimic those of a human. The skin has a more realistic construction than previous versions and the robot can handle complex interactions.

IRON is powered by three Turing AI chips that are designed to handle advanced computing in real time. The robot can also learn through observation and interact independently with humans. The first commercial use is intended for environments such as service, guidance or customer management. XPENG plans large-scale production before the end of 2026, which is an ambitious timeline compared to other players in humanoid robotics.

Flying vehicles are approaching mass production

XPENG's aviation division ARIDGE unveiled two new low-flying vehicles that will be able to navigate in both urban and regional environments. One of these vehicles was the hybrid aircraft A868, which has six seats, a range of up to 500 kilometers and a top speed of 360 kilometers per hour. The model is designed for short and medium-distance transport that is currently handled by traditional airplanes or helicopters.

The first mass-produced Land Aircraft Carrier vehicle is already in trial production and over 7,000 pre-orders have been placed. ARIDGE has prepared a production capacity of up to 10,000 units per year. This places XPENG among the first in the world to work towards large-scale production of flying vehicles aimed at the consumer market.

XPENG's strategic direction

XPENG AI Day clearly showed how the company is evolving from a pure electric car manufacturer to a broad technology company working with multiple categories at the same time. The vision is to create an ecosystem where mobility, robotics and physical AI merge. With VLA 2.0, XPENG has taken a step that can have a major impact on both the consumer market and the B2B segment.

The fact that Volkswagen became the first strategic partner shows that XPENG's technology is seen as an important part of future innovation also within the traditional automotive industry. It also opens the door for more European collaborations as the technology develops.
