iOS 26 is here: Why Apple is skipping iOS 19

Apple will introduce a significant change at WWDC 2025: instead of the current sequential numbering, they will name their operating systems by year. So in the fall of 2025, we will get iOS 26 instead of iOS 19, and the same goes for iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. This move is intended to unify and simplify Apple's software offerings.

If you've ever wondered why your iPhone 16 uses iOS 18, even if your MacBook is running macOS 15 and your Apple Watch is running watchOS 12, you're not alone. Apple finally admitted that his operating system numbering had become confusing. That's why the upcoming update will introduce a new naming scheme based on years. So – iOS 26. And of course, there will you will probably also get version 25.1.

Main change: Naming by year

According to Bloomberg, Apple to announce at WWDC 2025, which starts on June 9, that they will name their operating systems after the year, instead of continuing with sequential numbering. So in the fall of 2025, we will get iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26 and visionOS 26.

This change is intended to unify the different versions of the operating system, which received different numbers due to different release times. For example, iOS is currently on version 18, watchOS is on version 12, and visionOS is on version 2.

Visual redesign: Inspired by visionOS

In addition to the name change, Apple is also expected to introduce a visual overhaul to its operating systems, which will draw inspiration from visionOS, the operating system for the Vision Pro. Users can expect more rounded icons, transparent elements, and a more dynamic interface that will be consistent across all devices.
