Swedes' trust in new technology continues to decline. Only 56 percent believe that digitalization will lead to a better future – a sharp decline from 76 percent in 2020. This shows Tomorrow Report 2025, Nexer Group's recurring analysis of how Swedes view the role of technology in societal development. The results point to a marked shift where optimism is being replaced by caution and increased demands for responsibility, safety and societal benefit.
The report shows that the decline is occurring across all age groups and is particularly evident among women. The uncertainty, global changes and increased security threats of recent years have affected the view of opportunities and risks of technology.

Martin am Zoll, CEO of Nexer Group, believes that the change reflects a maturity in the view of digitalization. “The fact that optimism is decreasing does not mean that faith in technology has disappeared, rather that we have become more aware and are setting higher demands. Swedes want to see innovation which is based on responsibility and benefit.”
Europe needs digital independence
One of the report's clearest conclusions is the strong support for European digital independence. A full 89 percent of Swedes want Europe to develop its own digital platforms to reduce dependence on the US and China.
Support is strongest among older adults (65–79 years), where 95 percent see a need for European alternatives. Support remains high among young adults, at 80 percent. This shows a broad consensus that digital infrastructure, data management and technological innovation should be on a European basis to create increased security and competitiveness.
Digital defense is prioritized over climate
When Swedes are asked what the country should invest most in, a clear priority emerges: 58 percent want to see increased investment in digital defense over climate technology. This marks a shift from the late 2010s, when climate dominated public debate.
It changed security mode In Europe, cyber threats and geopolitical uncertainty have made digital resilience a national priority. The report shows that the Swedes Increasingly, technology investments are linking to security, preparedness and public safety.
Strong support to contribute to total defense
Another clear trend is the desire to contribute to Sweden's digital preparedness. 81 percent are positive that their private digital equipment – such as mobile phones, computers and routers – should be able to be used by the state in the event of war, under strictly regulated conditions.
Support varies between generations. Among people over 50, support is 87 percent, while among young people (18–29 years old) it is lower, at 66 percent. Despite the difference, the majority in all age groups is positive about a national joint effort.
AI in schools creates divided perceptions
AI is already becoming a natural part of education systems all over the world. In Sweden, opinion is divided.
41 percent want to see AI as a tool in education, 36 percent are against and 23 percent are unsure. This shows that the issue requires both guidance and clear ethical frameworks. The need for knowledge is great, among teachers, students and parents.

Jennie Sinclair, founder of Techposition, believes that Sweden risks falling behind if trust in technology continues to decline. “We must quickly get the Swedish people on the positive the wave so that we don't risk losing interest which could affect investments and future innovation.”
Behind the report
Tomorrow Report 2025 is based on a recurring survey conducted by Kantar Sifo, produced by Techposition and Nexer Group. This year's report is based on responses from 2000 Swedes aged 18–79 years. The sample is nationally representative based on gender, age and region. The aim is to provide a clear picture of how Swedes look at technology role and development.
