A new collaboration between Virta, Mastercard and Worldpay is making electric vehicle charging easier by introducing card payments at all charging stations in Sweden and Europe. The recently launched solution, Virta Payment Kiosk, enables secure and reliable card transactions at electric vehicle charging stations, improving the user experience.
Until now, electric car drivers have mostly used specific apps to manage charging. However, with the increasing popularity of electric cars, the need for more convenient payment options, especially card payments, is growing.
“The lack of consistent and easy-to-use payment options at charging stations has long been a frustration for electric vehicle drivers. We are therefore pleased to partner with Virta and Worldpay to set new standards in payments in the charging landscape and contribute to more sustainable mobility,” says Erik Gutwasser, Division Head Mastercard Nordics and Baltics.
Profitable benefits for charging station operators
Virta Payment Kiosk will also increase profitability for charging station operators by reducing costs and speeding up implementation. In addition, the new solution will be compatible with multiple charging stations at the same location, contributing to greater flexibility.
“By expanding the range of payment methods with card payments, we achieve full choice and flexibility for consumers. We expect Payment Kiosk to increase the use of charging stations, especially in high-traffic areas, by offering fast and convenient charging without having to download an app,” says Elias Pöyry, Co-Founder and Chief Business Development Officer at Virta.
European coverage target
The collaboration means that Virta Payment Kiosk will be rolled out in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. The ambition is to make card payments available at all Powered by Virta charging stations in Europe by the end of 2025.
