Key Moments

Partnership for fiber expansion

GlobalConnect and Nokia are collaborating in the Nordics with major investments, especially in Finland.

XGS-PON technology

The new technology enables speeds of up to 10 Gb/s and significantly reduces energy consumption.

Future network upgrades

GlobalConnect prepares the network for speeds of 25, 50 and 100 Gb/s.

Fiber as a greener alternative

Fiber connectivity offers a greener, energy-efficient solution that can be easily future-proofed.

The Nordic companies have entered into a partnership to implement Nokia's next-generation fiber technology and thereby accelerate GlobalConnects fiber deployment in the Nordics. The collaboration has already begun, with Nokia as the supplier for the fiber deployment in Finland, where GlobalConnect is investing 500 million euros over the coming years. In addition to higher speeds, the technology will reduce energy consumption in the fiber network by 6 to 15 times when the set target for the number of connected households is reached.

“We are pleased to partner with Nokia to implement state-of-the-art, energy-efficient, technologically leading fiber technology in Finland. This will significantly strengthen our network while supporting the continued digitalization of Finnish households, businesses and municipalities. It is also a testament to GlobalConnect’s commitment to offering high-quality services in the most future-proof network in the Nordics,” says Uffe Tomasson, CTO at GlobalConnect.

Fiber is the greenest way to deliver high-speed connections and can be easily upgraded, ensuring customers are ready for the broadband of the future today.

The new technology, called XGS-PON, offers low power consumption and is a very energy-efficient alternative to the older Point-to-Point (P2P) technology that is common in the Nordics today. With this technology, GlobalConnect will be able to offer its customers fiber with speeds of up to 10 Gb/s. In addition to the rollout in Finland, tests GlobalConnect is currently testing the technology in Sweden and is planning a launch in the first quarter of 2025.
