The partnership is another sign of how generative AI is rapidly transforming the software industry. More and more companies are now moving from pilot projects and tests to integrating AI as a central part of their operations, which places new demands on technology, security, governance and skills.

What is Codex?

Codex is OpenAI platform for AI-assisted software development and AI agents. The platform is built on advanced language models that can understand, generate, analyze and improve code, and help developers automate parts of the development process.

The technology can be used for everything from code generation and debugging to documentation, testing, and modernization of legacy applications. More recently, Codex has also evolved to support AI agents that can perform more advanced tasks with limited human intervention.

For many companies, technology is seen as a way to increase productivity, reduce development times, and free up resources for more strategic work.

AI becomes a natural part of the developer's everyday life

According to Cognizant, the technology is already being used in several areas of development work. The company's developers use Codex throughout the development cycle on customer projects, from developing AI and machine learning models to code refactoring, agent-based solutions and modernizing legacy systems.

The technology is used for, among other things:

  • Development of AI and machine learning models
  • Code generation and code refactoring
  • Automated testing and quality assurance
  • Modernization of legacy applications
  • Development of AI agents
  • Streamlining DevOps and delivery processes

The goal is to reduce the time from idea to finished solution while improving quality, safety and traceability.

According to Cognizant, using Codex can contribute to faster delivery cycles, improved code quality, lower development costs, and reduced risk in large-scale modernization projects.

From developer tools to enterprise platform

A central part of the collaboration is that Codex is no longer considered just a tool for individual developers. Instead, the platform is evolving into a foundation for how companies build, operate, and manage AI agents at scale.

It is a development that OpenAI sees as crucial as organizations begin to use AI in business-critical processes.

“Codex is becoming a powerful platform for managing AI agents in both software development and business processes. As companies look to adopt Codex, we partner with leading partners, like Cognizant, to help them move from early adopters to scalable implementations,” said Denise Dresser, Chief Revenue Officer at OpenAI.

According to OpenAI, the next phase of AI development is not just about generating code or content. The focus is instead on developing AI agents that can perform complex tasks, collaborate with humans, and integrate into existing business systems and workflows.

Humans and AI should work together

Cognizant sees AI as a tool that augments developer capabilities rather than replacing human expertise.

“The best development companies in the next decade will not be defined by how many developers they have, but by how effectively they get humans and AI to work together,” says Rajesh Varrier, President Operations at Cognizant.

The statement reflects a broader trend in the IT industry where competitive advantage will increasingly be determined by how well organizations manage to combine human expertise with AI-powered tools, automation and intelligent workflows.

Focus on security, governance and compliance

As AI moves into mission-critical processes, security and compliance requirements increase. Many organizations still struggle with data protection, governance, risk management and liability issues associated with generative AI.

As part of the collaboration, Cognizant will help clients establish structures for safe AI use, including governance, compliance and control mechanisms that enable the use of AI at scale without compromising security or regulatory requirements.

This becomes particularly important in sectors such as finance, public administration, healthcare and other industries where legal requirements and data protection play a crucial role.

AI modernization is expected to be a growing market

While AI investments are increasing, many organizations are facing the challenge of modernizing legacy systems that often lack support for modern AI solutions.

Here you see both Cognizant and OpenAI offer significant opportunities. By using AI for analysis, code transformation, documentation, and automation, companies can accelerate modernization projects that were previously both time-consuming and costly.

For many organizations, AI can thus become a tool for faster migration of business-critical applications to modern platforms while reducing development costs and increasing the pace of innovation.

What does collaboration mean for companies?

The collaboration between Cognizant and OpenAI shows how generative AI is rapidly moving from experimental technology to an integral part of companies' development strategies.

For organizations, this means new opportunities to:

  • Accelerate software development
  • Streamline modernization of legacy systems
  • Scale the use of AI agents
  • Improve the productivity of development teams
  • Strengthen governance and control over AI use
  • Shorten the time from idea to finished solution

At the same time, the initiative underlines that successful AI implementation is no longer just about technology. At least as important is the ability to combine AI, people, processes and governance in a model that works at scale.

With Cognizant As a partner, OpenAI takes another step towards establishing Codex as a central platform for AI-driven software development, modernization, and automation in enterprises worldwide.
