New report: AI pushes cyberattack development from months to days

New report: AI pushes development of cyberattacks from months to days – Published by IT-Branschen

AI cyber threats and agent-based AI are developing rapidly in Sweden and changing the entire threat landscape. A new report from Check Point Research, “The AI Landscape Threat Report“, shows how cyberattacks are becoming both faster and more advanced.

In Sweden, the discussion of the future has long revolved around generative AI, but recently autonomy and agents have taken on an increasingly important role. As development accelerates, the threat landscape is also becoming more acute. New statistics show that agent-based AI has changed the cyber threat landscape significantly over the past two months. What previously required up to 30 weeks of work from multiple engineering teams can now be completed in less than seven days by a single person. This marks a clear and worrying shift: agentic AI has gone from an experimental tool to a key operational component for cybercriminals.

At the same time, technological developments are only part of the problem. In many cases, the greatest risk lies within the organizations themselves. In Sweden, over half of companies have invested in generative AI, but its use is often characterized by a lack of control. Although barely three percent of AI prompts leads to data leaks, a full 90 percent of organizations using GenAI exhibit high-risk behaviors. In addition, 16 percent of all prompts contain potentially sensitive information, which in the wrong hands could have serious consequences.

“AI should now be assumed to be involved in virtually every step of the attack chain, from malware development to threat assessment and analysis, even when it is not directly visible,” says Oscar Rodin, security expert at Check Point Software. For organizations, this means that threats are not only evolving faster, but also becoming more adaptable and scalable, making it necessary to review the governance, use, and security around generative AI.

Against this backdrop, Check Point believes that there is a clear gap in the digitalized ecosystem. Investments in AI-adapted security controls, as well as more proactive work with intelligence and continuous monitoring are required. AI-driven cyber risk is therefore no longer a future scenario, but a reality that must be managed here and now.
